The obligatory of electronic invoices to public institutions (B2G) is extending in Europe. And Estonia, the most advanced country in digital society, doesn’t want to fall behind. From July 1st 2019, Estonia will implement the obligatory of electronic B2G invoicing. In other words, the billing process between companies and the Estonian government.
According to the European Directive 2014/55/EU on electronic invoicing, all European public administrations must be prepared to receive and process electronic invoices that comply with European standards (the EN 16931-1 format), since April 2019. However, Estonia has made obligatory issuing electronic invoices to the public sector.
The Estonian Tax Authority, the Center of Registers and Information Systems (RIK, in Estonian) will maintain their electronic billing system, e-Financials, to issue and receive e-invoices from public authorities. With this initiative, Estonia joins the majority of European countries to legislate in electronic billing.
